Game 4 P.E.A.C.E alumnus Randy Skinner, born in Portsmouth, Virginia began his musical journey in grade six, where he started playing brass instruments within the Virginia Public Education system. His early exposure to diverse musical influences such as Kool and the Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, and Wynton Marsalis profoundly shaped his musical development. During his high school years, he expanded his repertoire and began performing R&B professionally with a local band, The Mighty Impersonators. His professional performances included gigs on military bases and in clubs around the Virginia Beach area, marking the start of his career in music.

Randy’s formal education in music continued through his high school years, where he further honed his skills. Randy is an alumnus of both Shaw University and Berklee College of Music. His passion for music led him to pursue advanced studies, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of various music genres, including jazz, blues, R&B, and funk. This diverse educational background laid the foundation for his future career and his ability to blend different musical styles seamlessly.

Randy’s professional career saw a significant leap when he joined George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, a group known for its eclectic mix of funk, soul, and rock. As a trumpeter with the group, Randy contributed to the distinctive sound that made Parliament-Funkadelic legendary in the music world. His time with the group allowed him to hone his skills and gain recognition as a talented musician.

After his tenure with Parliament-Funkadelic, Randy moved to Atlanta, Georgia, a hub of musical innovation. Here, he formed his own group, Skin-Tones in Pursuit, featuring prominent musicians like Fred Wesley, a former trombonist for James Brown. The band combines elements of jazz, blues, and funk, reflecting Randy’s diverse musical background and his ability to blend different genres seamlessly.

Randy continues to be an active figure in the music industry, performing with various bands in the Southeast. He recently collaborated with George Clinton and Tracey Clinton on the single “Keeping The Funk Alive,” a track that pays homage to the classic sounds of 70s funk while infusing modern energy and style. This collaboration showcases Randy’s enduring passion for music and his ability to connect with both veteran musicians and newer generations of artists.

Beyond his performance career, Randy is deeply committed to mentoring and teaching young musicians. His teaching experience spans various educational settings, where he has shared his extensive knowledge of music theory, performance techniques, and the history of different music genres.
